yahrzeit

Yiddish

also: yartzeit

the annual anniversary of a loved one's death

A yahrzeit is the annual anniversary of a death, marked by lighting a candle that burns for twenty-four hours and reciting Kaddish, usually at synagogue with a minyan present. Families track the date on the Hebrew calendar, not the civil one, so it drifts against the regular calendar year to year. People who remember almost no other Hebrew dates somehow never forget this one.
