The chuppah is the canopy a couple stands under during a Jewish wedding ceremony, open on all four sides and often just a large cloth held up on poles. It's meant to represent the home the couple is about to build together, which is why some families use a tallit or a cloth passed down from a grandparent instead of a rented one. Who holds the poles is its own small honor to hand out.
