Bar mitzvah, for boys at thirteen, and bat mitzvah, for girls at twelve or thirteen depending on the community, mark the point where a Jewish child becomes obligated to follow the commandments. It's a status you become on that birthday whether or not anyone throws a party for it. Most people picture the party, the DJ, the candle-lighting ceremony, but the actual bar or bat mitzvah is just turning that age as a Jew.
