bimah

The bimah is the raised platform in a synagogue from which the Torah is read and services are led. Its placement, front, center, or somewhere between, is one of the visible ways a synagogue's architecture signals its denomination. Getting called up to the bimah for a Torah honor is still the moment a lot of kids remember from their bar or bat mitzvah more than anything said afterward.
