dvar Torah

Hebrew

a short teaching on the week's Torah portion

Literally "a word of Torah": a short teaching or commentary on the week's parsha, usually a few minutes long, given at services or at the Shabbat table. Anyone can give one, not just the rabbi, which is why they range from genuinely sharp to a relative rambling for ten minutes about a verse they half remember.
