Tefillin are small black leather boxes containing scriptural verses, worn on the arm and forehead during weekday morning prayers and held on with leather straps. The practice is traditionally associated with men, though it's not exclusive to them and varies by community. Learning to wrap the strap correctly is its own small skill, and most people who do it daily still glance at a chart the first few times.
