shiva
Hebrewthe seven-day mourning period after a burial
Shiva is the seven-day mourning period observed by close relatives after a burial, spent at home while the community comes to visit rather than the other way around. The phrase is "sitting shiva," and the point of the visit isn't to say the right thing so much as to just show up and sit with people. Mirrors get covered, low stools come out, and somebody always brings too much food.
