kippah

A kippah is the head covering worn by observant Jews, traditionally men though not exclusively depending on community, as a sign of respect and awareness of God above. Yarmulke is the Yiddish word for the same thing, and most English speakers use it interchangeably with kippah without knowing they're switching languages mid-sentence. They come in every material and size, from a bobby-pinned scrap of suede to something the size of a dinner plate.
