Aramaicthe mourner's prayer, said by those in mourning
Kaddish is the prayer said by mourners, recited daily for eleven months after a parent's death and then yearly on the yahrzeit. The prayer itself never mentions death. It's entirely praise of God, in Aramaic, the same text used at other points in the service that have nothing to do with mourning. That mismatch between what the prayer says and what it's used for is real and it surprises people who assume it must be some kind of eulogy.
