Texas Hangs the Ten Commandments

A judge orders them into every Galveston classroom. Two rabbis want the Supreme Court in.

Britain's Greens voted that Zionism is racism. The motion passed 1,022 to 813 Sunday at the party's Brighton conference and backs a "single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine." A clause shielding Jewish Greens in Zionist synagogues from party discipline was voted down. Leader Zack Polanski, who is Jewish, skipped the vote. 1

Israel is closing the gap the flydubai attack exposed. The Transportation Ministry told foreign airlines Sunday that citizens of 27 countries, including Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, can't fly as pilots or crew on flights to Israel. Gadi Eisenkot and Naftali Bennett want Transportation Minister Miri Regev fired. 2

The IDF chief thanked the analyst nobody listened to. Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir gave a certificate of appreciation Sunday to "Vav," a Unit 8200 chief warrant officer. Eighteen days before October 7, her dossier warned Hamas was training for an invasion, and senior intelligence officers dismissed it. Zamir called her "a clear example of intellectual courage and professionalism." 3

Keep the Commandments in shul. Judge Jeth Jones ruled Thursday that Galveston's schools must hang the Ten Commandments in every classroom within 10 days. Attorney General Ken Paxton sued after the school board voted against the Protestant version a 2025 state law requires. Two rabbis, Mara Nathan of San Antonio and Joshua Fixler of Houston, want the Supreme Court to hear their challenge. Fixler hears from parents that their kids know "the state is elevating literally one religious tradition over all others." 4 We're with the rabbis. Our kids learn those ten lines from teachers we picked, in the translation we use, and a public school has no business choosing a church's edition for them. The Court struck down a nearly identical Kentucky law in 1980. It should say so again.

This Shabbat is Bereshit, and the Torah starts over at "In the beginning," running from creation to Cain killing Abel. 5 Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan follows that night 6, so the haftarah becomes I Samuel 20, which opens with Jonathan telling David "machar chodesh," tomorrow is the new moon. 57
