NYPD Preps for a Very Different 9/11

NYPD's biggest High Holiday deployment yet has to cover two dates at once: Rosh Hashanah, which begins the evening of September 11, and the 25th anniversary of the attacks. Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday that patrols outside synagogues will expand across all five boroughs. Antisemitic hate crimes in the city are up 9% from last year. ¹

Federal prosecutors say a man charged with stabbing two people outside a Jewish center on the Upper West Side had antisemitic texts on his phone before the attack. Raul Morales allegedly stabbed a man wearing a kippah and a bystander on July 23; both are still recovering. He has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder as a hate crime. ²

Eight Muslim-majority countries want the world to copy Britain's new ban on West Bank settlement goods. Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE backed the UK's total import ban in a joint statement Wednesday, a day after Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced it. Israel responded by closing its Jerusalem consulate to the UK. ³

Karishma Manzur's entire pitch to New Hampshire Democrats was that Chris Pappas takes orders from AIPAC. She lost the Senate primary to him by nearly two to one. Pappas actually gave that line plenty to work with, voting present on an Israel aid amendment and calling for a "reset" with Israel, and Democratic voters picked him anyway. "Shill for AIPAC" used to be an accusation that could sink a campaign on its own. It didn't dent a candidate who'd already drifted from AIPAC's own preferences. The Democrats losing primaries this cycle are the ones leading with that line, not the ones it's aimed at.

Today is 28 Elul, the day before Rosh Hashanah, which this year begins the evening of September 11, the 25th anniversary of the attacks. Daniel Lewin, an Israeli-American entrepreneur and former Sayeret Matkal officer, is widely considered the attacks' first victim, killed aboard the hijacked Flight 11. ⁴⁵
